What to do for an anniversary in Komodo: the sunrise and sunset plan, frame by frame
Updated 3 November 2026
Plan an anniversary in Komodo around two events: sunset at Kalong on day one and sunrise at Padar on day two. Over the year the sun rises between 05:31 and 06:18 and sets between 17:49 and 18:27. Gandiva's sample route holds five frames, and the captain and the weather decide their order. Checked 3 November 2026.
Two clocks to plan around
Light in Komodo runs on a short clock. The islands sit about 8.5 degrees south of the equator, so the dusk is brief. The blue hour after sunset lasts around twenty minutes, and the sky is dark soon after. That is why an anniversary here is planned around two events, one at each end of the day.
Over a year, sunrise at Padar moves from 05:31 to 06:18, with 05:31 in November and 06:18 in July. Sunset at Kalong moves from 17:49 to 18:27, with 18:01 in November and 17:57 in July. Those are table values for the two places. They do not promise where Gandiva will be at that minute.
The boat's own sample itinerary says it can change with traffic, weather and tides. Stop order is the captain's to set, and the overnight anchorage comes out of the same decision. We can promise the best place to stand when the light comes. We cannot promise the sky.
The shot list for the three-day sample route
Five frames, each tied to a stop on the sample 3D2N route and to the light at that stop. You carry the camera. A photographer is an extra on a private charter.
- Shot 1, day one, Kalong, twenty minutes before sunset: the fruit bats leave the mangroves as the light drops, about 18:01 in November. Put the sun behind the boat for gold on the sails, or in front of you for silhouettes.
- Shot 2, day one, after the bats: dinner at the deck table with the lamps lit and the sails dark against the sky. A lantern dinner on the beach can be asked for; it carries a written quote, and the sea and the captain have the last word.
- Shot 3, day two, Padar, first light: the viewpoint over three bays. The climb takes 25 to 45 minutes. Your entry slot, not the sunrise, sets your arrival time.
- Shot 4, day two, Pink Beach or Taka Makassar, midday: the sun stands overhead, which flattens faces and deepens the colour of the water. Shoot the sea and leave the portraits for evening.
- Shot 5, day three, Sebayur or Kanawa, morning: one last swim, then the final frame back on the deck with the wet teak and the harbour ahead.
Manta Point sits on day two as well. Mantas are never guaranteed, so treat any manta frame as a gift and not an item.
The Arjuna frames
Arjuna is the cabin that gives a couple frames of their own. The room sits on the upper deck, looks out to sea, and has its own balcony plus a freestanding tub under the windows. The turn-down in the boat's photographs puts towel swans on the bed, which is a small thing and a good one for the first picture of the trip.
Take two glasses to the balcony at sunset. Whether the sun lands in front of the balcony or behind it depends on how the boat lies at anchor. Ask the crew where the sun will set once the anchor is down, and move the glasses to the deck rail if the balcony faces the wrong way.
The limits are simple. Neither the balcony nor the bath exists anywhere else on board, so Arjuna is the cabin that sells out first on open trips. Nakula and Sadewa are upper-deck cabins with a sea view and no balcony. Bima and Yudhistira are on the lower deck with portholes, not sea views.
What to arrange before you sail
Decoration, a cake, a private beach dinner and a photographer are services on request. We quote each in writing before you pay. None is free and none sits inside the boat price.
Documentation depends on the way you sail. On a private charter nobody records the trip for you unless you ask: the guide and a photographer or videographer are extras, each priced on its own. Open-trip fares come with the guide and with camera, GoPro and drone documentation that the cabins share.
A drone needs a park permit. ANTARA reported on 26 October 2024 that PP 36/2024 sets the drone tariff at two million rupiah per unit per day, and we treat it as a separate line on every trip. Ask us before you pack one. The same report lists a pre-wedding photo and video tariff of three million rupiah for foreigners. We cannot tell you whether a hired photographer at an anniversary falls under it, so we ask the park office before we book one for you.
Light check and the contact sheet
Light check. Face the sun for silhouettes and turn your back on it for faces. Bring a light layer for the deck after sunset and shoes with grip for Padar.
- Kalong, day one: the sunset frame, a stop on the sample route whichever way you sail.
- Arjuna balcony: 2 seats at IDR 11,500,000 (≈ USD 706) on the open trip, Monday & Friday.
- Whole boat, 3D2N: IDR 100,000,000 (≈ USD 6,135) for one to four guests, guide and photographer on request.
- Extras: decoration, cake, beach dinner and photographer, quoted in writing.
On the day, keep the list short. Five frames is a plan you can finish; fifteen is a chore, and the anniversary is not a shoot. Take the sunset and the sunrise, and let the rest of the trip be unphotographed.
What this means for your dates
- Pick the month by the light you want. Sunrise runs from 05:31 to 06:18, so a July sunrise is later than a November one.
- Ask for a Padar entry slot early enough for sunrise. The park splits Padar into three sessions, as Metro TV reported on 30 March 2026, and a slot decides your climb.
- Weather closures can remove Padar for a day. A buffer day protects an anniversary date.
- Gandiva is in annual maintenance in January and February 2027.
Give us your date and party size and the frames for that week come back on WhatsApp.
A practical note to finish: the order of stops belongs to the captain, so we write the plan as a set of options and confirm the final version with the boat close to sailing.

FAQ
What time is sunset for an anniversary dinner in Komodo?
Kalong's sun goes down as early as 17:49 and as late as 18:27; in November, at 18:01. Dinner follows on deck, once the light has gone. Weather and the captain choose the anchorage that day, so the sunset spot is a plan and not a promise.
Can we have a beach dinner for our anniversary?
We can ask for one. A beach dinner is an extra we arrange on request. It gets its own written quote and is never inside the boat price. Sea state and the captain's call on the day decide whether it happens on the sand.
Is a photographer included on a private charter?
No. Hire the whole boat and you hire no guide and no photographer with it; they come as extras. We add a photographer when you ask and send a separate quote. Open-trip fares already hold the guide and the documentation, which the other cabins share.
Which stop is best for a sunrise photograph?
Padar's viewpoint over three bays is the classic sunrise frame. The climb needs 25 to 45 minutes, and your park slot fixes when you can be there. A closure or a weather day can remove it, and we never guarantee the sky.
