Pink Beach: a pale colour that depends on the light

Updated 3 November 2026

Pink Beach in Komodo: the sand reads pale pink, not bright pink, because fragments of red coral are mixed into it, and it reads best in soft morning light. Gandiva stops here on day two of the three-day route, with reef close to the shore for snorkelling.

Why the sand reads pink, and when it reads best

Crushed red coral, mixed into pale sand, gives the tint. There is no other trick, and it explains the limits. The colour is pale pink, never bright, and it shifts as the light and the tide shift. A visitor who expects a flamingo shade will be let down. A visitor who looks in the right light will see a soft rose line along the water.

Calmer water and softer light arrive in the morning, which is when this stop works. On day two of the three-day route Gandiva comes here after Padar, so the sun is already up but not yet high. The captain sets the order, and a change of tide or wind can move it.

For the frame, look at the wet band where the last wave drew back. Wet sand holds more colour than dry, and the contrast with the blue beyond it is the picture. Stand low, close to the water, with the sun to the side rather than in your face.

Other lists call this beach Long Beach, because the same stop includes snorkelling and paddle boarding. It is the same place.

Wading in from the tender

The speedboat tender runs you from the boat to the shallows. Plan for a wet landing. Carry your shoes in a bag, put the phone in a case, and keep the camera dry until your feet are on sand.

Reef lies close to the shore here, which is good for snorkelling and a reason to look where you put your feet. Walk in with your eyes on the bottom and do not step on coral you cannot see.

Step off on the side the crew points to, and let the first person in test the depth. Depth is 1 to 8 metres and the water moves gently. Most of the first stretch is shallow enough to stand.

If you want a picture of the two of you arriving, give the phone or the camera to a crew member before you board the tender, and say what you want in the frame. The shot list is yours; the camera is yours unless you add a photographer, and the open trip's documentation is in the fare.

Snorkelling off the sand

Give the swim 45 to 90 minutes. Reef begins near the beach, so a short swim puts coral under you. It is easy, and it suits swimmers of every level, including the ones who prefer to hold the boat's vest and float.

The fare covers snorkelling gear and life jackets. Wear a vest if you are unsure; nobody will comment. A child from age 3 pays the full fare, and the same care applies: a vest, an adult within arm's reach and a pause in the shallows.

In July and August this beach is busy, and the best answer is to go in early. The reef looks the same at nine and at eleven, but the beach does not.

If the water is calm, the stand-up paddle boards on Gandiva are a quiet way to see the colour of the sand from above. Whether they come out is the captain's call and the water's, and we do not list it as part of the day.

Shade, hats and the middle of the day

Bring the shade with you. A hat with a brim, a thin long-sleeved top over swimwear and reef-safe sunscreen do more than any tree on the beach. Reef-safe sunscreen is on the packing list we send.

By late morning the sun is high and the colour of the sand goes flat. That is the moment to be in the water, looking down, not on the beach looking at it. A pale pink line photographs well at a low angle and badly from above at noon.

Drink before you feel thirsty. The boat has free-flow water, tea and coffee, but the beach has none, and a litre bottle in the tender's bag solves it.

Light check. Early on, the sun sits low and soft over the water, and the sand takes its colour from the side. Wear a hat and a thin long-sleeved top, and pack sunscreen in the tender bag for the midday swim.

FAQ

Is Pink Beach safe for small children to snorkel?

The snorkel water is 1 to 8 metres deep, it moves gently, and the reef lies near the beach. Children wear a life jacket from the boat, and an adult stays within reach. No stop is free of risk, so the adult decides on the day.

Do we need to be strong swimmers at Pink Beach?

No. It is an easy snorkel in shallow water with a mild current, and the life jackets on board are for anyone who wants one. The stop that asks for confident swimmers is Manta Point, where the current is strong.
