Gandiva Phinisi

A twenty-fifth or a fortieth, with three generations on one deck

Updated 3 November 2026

A parents' anniversary trip on a Komodo boat, a 25th or a 40th, fits three generations aboard Gandiva: five cabins, twelve guests at most. Eight guests on an open sailing pay by the seat, from IDR 9,000,000 (≈ USD 552) a head. Ten guests on the whole boat pay IDR 110,000,000 (≈ USD 6,748) for 3D2N.

Plan the family cabins

Parents at twenty-five or forty years, children in tow

A twenty-fifth comes with teenagers, a fortieth with grandchildren, and the boat must work for both. Begin with the cabin plan. Four cabins are doubles for two. The fifth takes two to four.

Take eight guests, the same party as the open-trip example further down. The couple whose date it is take Arjuna, on the upper deck, with the balcony and the freestanding bathtub. Their grown-up children take Nakula and Sadewa, also upper deck and sea view. The grandchildren go to Yudhistira, below, with one double bed and two single beds.

A staircase separates the two decks. If the grandchildren are small, put a parent in Yudhistira with them and give the other adults the upper cabins. Bima, the second lower-deck cabin, is the quiet room for a grandparent who prefers the lower deck. Ask how the doors lie and we confirm the layout in writing before you pay.

Yudhistira: the grandchildren in one room, the grandparents next door

Yudhistira is the family cabin: one double bed and two single beds, ensuite, air-conditioned, with a chiller and a safe box like the others. It sleeps two to four. On the open trip, two guests pay 2 x IDR 9,000,000 (≈ USD 552), and the third and fourth guest pay IDR 6,500,000 (≈ USD 399) each.

It is the cheapest way to sleep four under one roof, and the youngest can make their noise behind one door. Bear in mind it is a lower-deck room without a sea view. Children who want a window have three sundecks with sofas to spend the day on.

The couple whose anniversary it is needn't give up Arjuna to mind the children. Arjuna stays theirs, one deck up, with a balcony for the two of them and an evening glass on the rail. Only one cabin has that balcony, and on the open trip it sells first; for a fixed anniversary date, ask for it early.

Three days at a grandparent's pace

At 6 to 9 knots Gandiva is in no rush, and the days needn't be either. Day one: lunch on deck, the short climb at Kelor, a reef at Manjarite and the bats at Kalong. Kelor is 15 to 30 minutes of steep path to a view over the bay. The climb is optional; anyone can swim instead.

Day two holds Padar at first light. This is the demanding morning: loose, steep ground and a climb of between 25 and 45 minutes to the main viewpoint. A grandparent can watch the sunrise from the deck while the others go up. After that come Pink Beach, a ranger-led walk on Komodo, and an afternoon split between Taka Makassar and Manta Point. The walks have shorter and longer trails, so take the short one.

Day three is gentle: Sebayur and Kanawa, shallow reefs, a last swim, then the harbour. No manta is ever promised, Manta Point runs a strong current, and what is safe on the day is the captain's judgement. Not every stop suits every age, but the plan bends to the slowest walker. The three-day itinerary page has the full table, stop by stop.

Fares by age, and what a child needs aboard

A child below 3 is free when a parent or guardian travels too; from 3 up, it is the adult fare. Yudhistira is the one cabin that takes more than two, so a family of four there pays two seats at IDR 9,000,000 (≈ USD 552) and two extra beds at IDR 6,500,000 (≈ USD 399) each.

Give us the ages when you book. Before you pay, we confirm in writing whether the life jackets on board fit your youngest. The boat carries 30 life jackets for twelve guests, so there is one for everyone, and the vest stays on for the tender and at Manta Point.

Pack what a child needs on a deck: a hat, reef-safe sunscreen, shoes with grip for the Kelor climb, closed shoes for the Komodo walk, and any medicine of their own. Passport or ID details for every guest reach us seven days before sailing.

Gangway steps, vests and the captain's veto

Expect steps between decks, wet teak in the morning and a tender for the landings. A steady adult won't notice; a small child or a grandparent will want a hand. Upper-deck cabins are Arjuna, Nakula and Sadewa. Bima and Yudhistira are on the lower deck. Choose with the stairs in mind.

The captain's word is final. Wind, tide and park rules decide each day, and a landing can be skipped or the stops reshuffled. A grandparent with a bad knee is a reason to tell us early, so the plan leans on the sundecks and the water, not the ridge.

Aboard are two life rafts, 30 life jackets, 4 life buoys, 6 fire extinguishers and a first-aid kit. The radio is SSB and VHF, and a crew of 6 looks after twelve guests at most.

Eight seats on an open sailing against ten guests on the charter

Eight seats on an open sailing, 3D2N, fill four cabins: Arjuna, Nakula, Sadewa and Yudhistira with two guests. Read the bill as 2 x IDR 11,500,000 (≈ USD 706), 2 x IDR 10,000,000 (≈ USD 613), 2 x IDR 10,000,000 (≈ USD 613) and 2 x IDR 9,000,000 (≈ USD 552). Add the four lines for the family total. Guide and documentation are in those fares, and the other cabins belong to other parties.

Ten guests on the whole boat cost IDR 110,000,000 (≈ USD 6,748), 3D2N, in the band of nine to twelve. That is the private charter: nobody else on deck, any free date, and a guide and photographer quoted on request. At ten guests the seat total comes out lower than the band, but the seats would use all five cabins on a date when others also want them.

So it isn't really about which line is cheaper. It's about whether the family wants the deck to itself. January and February 2027 are maintenance.

FAQ

From which birthday does a child count as a full fare?

A child under 3 travels at no charge with a parent or guardian. From 3 the fare is the adult one. In Yudhistira, the third and fourth guest on the open trip pay IDR 6,500,000 (≈ USD 399) each.

If a grandparent stays off the Padar ridge, is the morning lost?

Yes. The ridge climb is between 25 and 45 minutes over loose, steep ground. A grandparent can stay on deck for the sunrise while the others go up. Tell us in advance and we plan the morning around it.

Is Gandiva suitable for young children?

No minimum age is printed on the price list. From age 3 a child pays the adult fare. Give us the ages at booking and our written reply covers life jackets and the cabin plan.
