Gandiva Phinisi
Your first arrival in Indonesia, before the boat
Updated 3 November 2026
First time in Indonesia for a Komodo anniversary: most visitors need a visa on arrival or an e-visa, fly to Labuan Bajo via Bali or Jakarta, and carry cash because ATMs are in town only. The tables below are dated; verify each fact before Gandiva sails.
The visa-on-arrival counter at the airport
Most visitors to Indonesia need a visa. Citizens of 97 listed countries can take a visa on arrival, and the same 30-day visa can be applied for online before you fly, through the immigration portal evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Use that portal only. Other sites sell the same form at a mark-up.
You also fill in the All Indonesia digital arrival card in the 72 hours before you land. At the counter the officer looks for a passport valid six months past your arrival date with two blank pages, and can ask to see an onward ticket. Citizens of ASEAN countries enter visa-free for 30 days.
Fees and rules change, so the table gives the figure we found and the date we checked it. Verify the fee and your nationality on the immigration site before you travel. Photograph your passport page and the arrival-card confirmation the night before, so both are on your phone at the counter.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) | Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. |
|---|---|
| e-VoA | The same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days. |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly. |
| Length of stay | 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry |
| Extension | Once, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end. |
| Visa-free entry | 30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages |
| Onward ticket | Proof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA |
| All Indonesia arrival card | Free and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration. |
| Arriving in Labuan Bajo | Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight |
| Bali tourist levy | IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee. |
Checked 11 October 2026 · Entry rules and fees change: confirm them on the official immigration site before you travel.
Flying in to Labuan Bajo, with an evening in hand
You land at Komodo International Airport (LBJ), which lies 2 to 3 km from the harbour. Few international flights arrive direct; connections run via Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya. The table shows the flight times we found; they are indicative, so check the airline for the schedule on your day.
If you pass through Bali, note that a separate Bali tourist levy applies to foreign visitors and sits outside the visa fee. The immigration site and the Bali provincial site give the current figure.
Plan to land the day before you board. A late or cancelled flight then costs you an evening, not the boat. The arrival note covers the pick-up, the pier and the first night.
| Airport | Komodo International Airport, code LBJ |
|---|---|
| Usual connections | Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB); Lombok and Kupang are smaller feeders |
| Flight time to Labuan Bajo | From Bali about 1 h 10 min to 1 h 20 min; from Surabaya about 1 h 30 min; from Jakarta 2 h 30 min to 3 h; from Lombok about 1 h |
| Airlines | Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia from Bali and Jakarta; Super Air Jet from Surabaya; Wings Air on the shorter island routes. Schedules change, so check before you book. |
| Airport to the harbour | 2 to 3 km, about 10 minutes by car |

ATMs, cards and notes for the harbour
In Labuan Bajo you pay in rupiah; foreign cash is of little use. ATMs stand along the harbour road in town and at the airport arrivals hall, where one machine can be out of order. The park and the islands have no machine at all, so your cash must come aboard with you.
Cards work at hotels, dive operators and larger restaurants, with a surcharge of 2 to 4 percent added at some. Small shops, markets and taxis take cash or QRIS. Withdrawal limits per transaction are low, so expect several withdrawals, each with a fee from the machine and another from your home bank. Decline any offer to convert the amount into your own currency at the machine.
Crew tips and personal spending go in cash. Our own payment options for the booking are on the how-to-book page: a card link adds 3 percent, PayPal adds 7.2 percent, and a card terminal in Labuan Bajo adds 3 percent.
| Currency | Indonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026 |
|---|---|
| ATMs | BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board. |
| ATM limits | IDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges |
| Cards or cash | Cards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash. |
| Tipping | Appreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range. |

Sunburn, hydration and a pocket pharmacy
We recommend travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation; scuba divers must hold dive insurance. A serious case in Komodo means a flight out, so the cover is what pays for it. Take this as general guidance, not medical advice, and put vaccination and medicine questions to your own doctor.
Choice in the town's pharmacies is narrow. Bring prescription medicine in its original packaging, with a letter from your doctor, and bring your own sunscreen. Our packing list asks for reef-safe sunscreen, trekking shoes, a small backpack and emergency cash. Dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses exist in the region, so carry repellent for the evenings on shore.
On the water, the sun and the glare do the damage. Cover your shoulders on the sundecks, drink water before you are thirsty, and wear a hat in the middle of the day. The emergency number for the police, ambulance and rescue services is 112, and the boat's crew carries a first-aid kit.
| Insurance | Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive |
|---|---|
| Private hospital | Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber |
| Public hospital | RSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber |
| Pharmacies | Available in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home |
| Emergency numbers | 112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue |
| Health risks | Dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite. |

FAQ
Can we take a visa on arrival, or should we apply online first?
If your country is among the 97 on the list, a 30-day visa is issued on arrival at Komodo Airport, and the same visa can be requested online ahead of the flight. Use evisa.imigrasi.go.id only, check your nationality on the immigration list, and verify the fee before travelling.
Is it enough to withdraw cash when we land in Labuan Bajo?
Take some at the airport if the machine works, and the rest in town before you board. Machines stand on the harbour road and in the arrivals hall; the park and the islands have none. Take what you need. Withdrawal limits per transaction are low, and your home bank adds its own fee.
