Gandiva Phinisi

A 28.5 m hull with two masts, measured honestly

Updated 3 November 2026

Gandiva is a two-masted sailing phinisi, 28.5 m long and 5.2 m wide, with a Mitsubishi 6D16 engine, five ensuite cabins on two decks, room for twelve guests and a crew of six. This page sets out her figures, cabin by cabin and system by system.

Length, beam, engine and water: the figures we can print

Gandiva measures 28.5 m by 5.2 m. A Mitsubishi 6D16 engine drives her at 6 to 9 knots, and the sails carry her on two masts when the wind agrees. Two generators of 42 kVA each run the air conditioning in the cabins. She carries 4000 litres of fuel and 5500 litres of fresh water, enough for the showers and for the bathtub in Arjuna.

Navigation is a Garmin GPS, a map and a compass. Communication is a marine radio on SSB and VHF, plus walkie-talkies. The tender is a speedboat with a 40 hp Yamaha engine.

If a number matters to your insurer, or you are simply curious, ask, and we answer in writing.

Five cabins on two decks, bed by bed

The upper deck holds three cabins, and the lower deck holds two. Arjuna, Nakula and Sadewa are upper-deck doubles with sea-view windows, and Arjuna alone adds a private balcony and a freestanding bathtub. Bima and Yudhistira are lower-deck cabins with portholes. Bima is a double. Yudhistira has one double bed and two single beds for two to four guests.

All five are ensuite, with air conditioning, a chiller and a safe box. The cabin showers have hot water. That is 5 private bathrooms for up to 12 guests, and no queue in the morning.

The bed plan below shows who sleeps on which deck. If a tall guest needs to know the length of a bed, write to us and we ask the boat before we answer.

The lounge, the deck table and three sundecks

Inside is a lounge with a bar, sofas, a 65-inch screen and karaoke, which stays off unless the guests aboard want it.

Out on deck you'll find a dining table with sofa benches under a shade roof, and three sundecks with relaxing sofas. A daybed sits on the upper deck, and the bow deck carries the paddle boards. Meals are laid at the deck table, and the same table becomes the place to wait for the bats at Kalong.

Gandiva carries stand-up paddle boards, a canoe and snorkelling gear, all in the fare. Local Wi-Fi is on board, and we leave it at that, because signal at sea comes and goes with the coast. A game for the lounge rounds off the list.

Twelve guests share all of this, and on a private charter the party has it alone. On the open trip the other cabins belong to other parties, who also use the table and the sundecks.

Radio, life raft, jackets and first-aid: the kit behind the camera

None of this kit makes it into the sail photographs, and all of it matters more. Gandiva carries 2 life rafts, each rated for fifteen, plus 30 life jackets, 4 life buoys, 6 fire extinguishers and a first-aid kit. The marine radio, the VHF and the GPS stay switched on and are the captain's tools, not yours.

The boat's crew of 6 and her cruise director look after 12 guests at most, and both are part of the fare. They belong to the boat; we do not run them. The captain decides each day's stops by wind, tide and park rules, and that decision is final.

We list it so you can see the numbers once, plainly. A list is not a promise about the sea, and we don't dress it up as one. Life jackets come with the fare; there's nothing to rent or pack. Ask us to send the list in writing if your family wants it before you pay.

Two masts and a speedboat tender

She has two masts, and the photographs show her under sail with the canvas lit gold at dusk; she is rigged to sail, not merely to motor. The sails are real. Whether they go up depends on the wind the captain finds. At 6 to 9 knots, the engine does the work of getting you to the next anchorage.

The tender is the speedboat. It takes you ashore for the landings, drops snorkellers at the reef edge and carries the paddle boards out to the water. It's a small boat, so wear shoes you can step down in.

Contact sheet. Length, beam, engine, speed, generators, tanks, tender, equipment, crew, and the deck of each cabin: every figure for the boat sits on this page.

FAQ

Is Gandiva a small, quiet boat, and who is aboard?

Gandiva carries 12 guests in 5 cabins, with a crew of 6 and a cruise director. On a private charter no other party sails. On the open trip other parties take the remaining cabins, and we tell you how many are booked on your date when you ask.

Do the cabins have air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a real window?

Every cabin has air conditioning, an ensuite bathroom, a chiller and a safe box, and local Wi-Fi is on board. Arjuna, Nakula and Sadewa have sea-view windows. Bima and Yudhistira are on the lower deck with portholes, and we do not call them sea-view rooms.
