How far ahead to book a Komodo boat trip when the date cannot move

Updated 3 November 2026

Book the day the date is fixed. Our advice is six months or more for July, August and December, three to four months for other months, because one balcony cabin, a daily park ticket cap and dated flights narrow the choice. Gandiva has no trips in January and February 2027. Checked 3 November 2026.

Four limits that set the lead time

Nobody publishes a figure for how early a Komodo boat fills, and we will not invent one. What we can do is set out the four limits that shape the answer.

  • The boat. Gandiva's open trips leave on Monday & Friday only, and a cabin sells to two. 101 departures are on the calendar. Arjuna is the single cabin with a balcony and a bathtub.
  • The park. Visits have been capped at 1,000 a day since 1 April 2026, according to ANTARA on 14 April 2026, and entry is reserved online.
  • The harbour. The harbour authority issues the sailing approval and can close routes for wind and waves.
  • You. Flights and hotels near Labuan Bajo book on their own clock, and a fixed anniversary date leaves no room to slide.

The first limit is ours to read off the calendar. The second is the one that changed most this year, and the next section turns to it.

Lead times by type of date

Treat these lead times as our booking team's advice, not a measurement. They are built on the limits above.

  • July and August: ask six months or more ahead. Floresa listed park visits of 63,133 for July against 12,609 for January in its report of 7 April 2026, although the extract we read gives no year.
  • December: six months or more, for the same reason.
  • March to June, and September to November: three to four months.
  • Under 30 days: ask anyway. A private charter can fit an open date, and we check the calendar live on WhatsApp. We cannot promise a date we have not seen.

The park ticket makes the late end harder than it was. By August the 365,000 places for 2026 had run out, according to CNN Indonesia on 29 September 2026; from September to December the park admits only 500 visitors a day. A ticket carries a date, and once that day fills it is gone.

What an early booking locks, and what it leaves open

Booking early is less of a gamble than it sounds, because the rules on moving and cancelling reward early notice.

  • The deposit is 50 percent. You settle the balance 30 days ahead of sailing; cash or the card terminal on the departure day also works.
  • Cancel with 60 days or more to go and 50 percent of your payment comes back; with 30 to 59 days to go the figure is 25 percent; with fewer than 30 days, nothing.
  • Moving your sailing is free if you tell us at least 30 days ahead. With 14 to 29 days left the charge is IDR 500,000. With fewer than 14, the move is handled as a cancellation.
  • If Gandiva cannot sail because her engine fails or the port or park office orders her to stay, another phinisi of equal or higher class takes your date free of charge, or your payment comes back in full, transferred within 2 days (2×24 hours) once the conditions are met.

Taken together, the rules leave you a month in which changing your mind costs nothing. The park tickets pull in the opposite direction: to reserve them we need passport or ID details a week before you sail.

January and February 2027, and the first March date

Gandiva goes into annual maintenance in January and February 2027. There are no trips in those two months, private or open. An anniversary that falls inside them cannot sail on this boat.

The open trips run again from 1 March 2027, on Mondays and Fridays, and 1 March 2027 is a Monday. A January or February date leaves you two real choices. Sail in December and call it an early celebration, or sail from the first Monday departure on 1 March and call it a late one. Ask us about sea conditions for the week you prefer, and keep a spare day either side.

Weather also moves the plan in the dry months. The harbour authority limited boats to Rinca for 6 to 8 August 2026 after a forecast of winds to 24 knots and waves to 2.4 metres, as detikBali reported on 6 August 2026. A buffer day protects a fixed date better than any amount of early booking.

A count-back from your sailing day

  • Day minus 180 or more: fix the date, ask for the calendar, choose cabin or whole boat.
  • Day minus 150: send the 50 percent deposit that holds the date.
  • Day minus 60: last day for a 50 percent refund. Book flights after we confirm the boarding hour in writing.
  • Day minus 30: the balance is due, unless you settle in cash or by terminal on departure day.
  • Day minus 7: send passport or ID details for the park tickets.
  • Day minus 1: be in Labuan Bajo, with the harbour transfer set around your flight.

The 60, 30 and 7 day marks come from our terms and the park ticket rules. The 180 and 150 day marks are our advice. Treat all of them as the latest safe moments, not as targets: earlier is better at every step, and the bigger the party the sooner the deposit should move.

What this means for your dates

  • Send us the date the day it is fixed. The Arjuna cabin is the first thing to narrow.
  • Do not wait for a lower price. Fares as of 3 November 2026, valid for the 2026 and 2027 sailings on the calendar; we confirm your date in writing before payment.
  • A date in January or February 2027 needs a move to December or March.
  • Keep one spare day on each side of the sailing for flights and weather.

Write to us with your date and party size. What comes back is what is free on that day, not a general promise.

If your date is already near, say so in your first message. A short lead time does not close the door, but it removes our room to offer alternatives, and an alternative can be the difference between a plan and a disappointment.

FAQ

Can I book Gandiva for next week?

Sometimes. We cannot say until we look. A private charter can fit any free date, and open trips leave on Monday & Friday. Send the dates on WhatsApp and we check the calendar live. We also need passport or ID details to reserve the park tickets, and the quota for the day has to allow it.

How early should I book the Arjuna cabin?

As soon as the date is fixed. Only Arjuna has a balcony and a bathtub, which makes it the first cabin to go on any open-trip Monday or Friday. For July, August and December our advice is six months or more. For other months, three to four months.

Can I move my date after booking?

Yes, within the rules. A change made 30 or more days out is free. At 14 to 29 days out you pay IDR 500,000, and closer than that the booking is treated as cancelled. Moving into January or February 2027 is not possible on Gandiva, which is in maintenance.

Do I buy my own Komodo park ticket?

No. The ticket is part of the park package we arrange for your trip type, and the figure comes to you in writing. For the booking by name we need passport or ID details a week before sailing, since the ticket also carries a date.
