Arriving in Komodo for your anniversary: a shot list from Bali, Jakarta and Lombok

Updated 3 November 2026

Land in Labuan Bajo a day ahead of boarding Gandiva. Komodo airport sits close to town (around 2 km, a ten-minute drive to the harbour), and the transfer is part of the trip. Allow roughly seventy minutes in the air from Bali, closer to 2.5 to 3 hours from Jakarta, and about one from Lombok. We checked this on 3 November 2026. Airlines move schedules and fares often: confirm yours with the carrier before you pay.

The arrival day as a shot list

No photographer turns up at the venue on the morning of a wedding and hopes for good light. The boarding hour on Gandiva is a morning hour, and we confirm it in writing when you book. Do not let a flight stand between you and that gangway.

So the plan starts the day before. Komodo airport is about 2 km from the town and the harbour, roughly 10 minutes by car, which is exactly why arriving the day before is so easy.

  • Shot 1, midday to mid-afternoon: land at Labuan Bajo. Pick-up between the airport or hotel and the harbour comes with every Gandiva booking. Send us the flight number and we set the time around it.
  • Shot 2, late afternoon: check in at a hotel near the harbour and leave the bags. Walk down to the waterfront with a camera and no schedule.
  • Shot 3, around sunset: a table with the water in the frame.
  • Shot 4, first light the next morning: a short walk before breakfast, then the pick-up to the boat at the hour we confirmed.

One warning, though. Ash from the Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption shut the airport for a spell in November 2024 (Bisnis, 10 November 2024). It was a one-off. Even so, with a night in hand a late plane costs you dinner, not the boat.

Which flight lands when: Bali, Jakarta and Lombok

The durations below are approximate. Fares are ranges from 2026 operator and press sources, reference month November 2026, and only indicative.

From Bali (DPS)

The shortest hop takes about 70 to 80 minutes. Garuda, Batik Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia are among the carriers, and sources disagree on daily frequency, so we print no number. One-way fares range from roughly USD 50 in a quiet month to about USD 150 in peak season.

From Jakarta (CGK)

Nonstop flights take about 2.5 to 3 hours. Fares run from roughly USD 80 to USD 250 one way. Leave Jakarta in the morning. A stop in Bali is possible but adds time and, on separate tickets, a baggage recheck.

From Lombok (LOP), including Wings Air

Detik reported that Wings Air began a Lombok service to Labuan Bajo on 22 July 2025: an ATR turboprop of 72 seats, three times a week at launch. The flight takes about an hour. Frequency on a young route shifts, so confirm it before fixing a date. As a rough guide, a one-way seat has been selling for between USD 60 and USD 140. Turboprops are stricter on baggage weight, which matters with camera gear.

We checked this on 3 November 2026. Airlines move schedules and fares often: confirm yours with the carrier before you pay. A planned Bali service from late November 2026 is mentioned in one reference source only, and we have not treated it as confirmed.

Flying in from China, Germany, France, Italy or Spain

There is no nonstop flight from any of these countries to Labuan Bajo. Every itinerary connects, most often in Bali or Jakarta, and sometimes in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, which also have services into Komodo airport. Frequencies on those international legs are small and change, so ask the airline.

  • China: fly to Bali or Jakarta first, then take the domestic leg. Aim to land in Indonesia the day before you need to be in Labuan Bajo, since a late arrival in Bali can push the domestic flight to the next morning.
  • Germany and the rest of Europe: long-haul to Jakarta, Bali, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, then on. Allow a night after the long flight rather than rushing to the harbour on a tight connection.
  • France, Italy and Spain: the same pattern. A single through ticket on one booking protects your connection. Separate tickets mean collecting bags and checking in again, so leave a gap of at least 2.5 to 3 hours.

Visa: most visitors can use a visa on arrival or the e-VoA applied for at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Wego reported on 4 May 2026 a fee of IDR 500,000 and a 30-day stay. The rules and the fee can change, so read the official site before you fly. The Bali tourist levy applies only if you enter Bali. If you fly straight to Labuan Bajo from Jakarta, it does not apply to you.

The surprise you can set up through us

A surprise needs someone who knows the schedule, and it can't be you. We pass your request to the right people before you arrive.

Decoration, a cake, a private beach dinner and a photographer are services on request. Each gets its own quote, in writing, before any payment. None is free and none sits inside the boat price. The boat's own photos show a beach dinner with lanterns in a circle on the sand, the kind of set-up we can ask for. Whether it happens on your trip depends on the weather and the captain's plan that day.

As for an airport lounge, we cannot confirm an arrival lounge at Komodo airport, so we do not promise one. What we can do is ask your hotel for early check-in or a held room, so the first thing you do after landing is sit down somewhere quiet.

Upgrade. Charter means the whole boat. On an open trip you book by the cabin, and the Arjuna cabin, with its balcony and freestanding bathtub, is the anniversary room. Two of you in Arjuna on the three-day open trip is 2 × IDR 11,500,000 (≈ USD 706). Only one cabin has that balcony, so it sells first.

Privacy. A private charter means no other guests aboard. On an open trip the boat carries up to twelve. A charter has no photographer or guide built in, so the camera stays yours unless you add one.

The first morning: the sunrise frame

Light check: at Labuan Bajo the sun comes up over the land behind the harbour around six o'clock, so the water in front of you takes the colour first and the hills catch up. Wear something that survives a wet jetty.

On the morning you board, the frame is simple. Stand on the waterfront with the sun behind you, facing the anchored boats, about twenty minutes before the sun clears the hills. Leave enough time to walk back and meet the pick-up. Shoot, then eat, then go.

On the water the sunrise belongs to the sky and the captain. Sailing order and anchorages follow weather, tides and park rules, so we cannot tell you which island you will be at when the light arrives. The sample 3D2N plan starts at Kelor, Manjarite and Kalong and moves to Padar on day two; the boat confirms the final route.

One rule to know before you finalise dates: Gandiva is in annual maintenance in January and February 2027, with no trips in those months.

The alternative: sea or road from Lombok

Some travellers consider a slow route: Lombok by road, then a multi-day boat or ferry chain across Sumbawa and on to Flores. Backpacker route guides describe a tourist-boat crossing of about three days and four nights in the dry season from April to October, and they warn about rough water near Sumbawa and crowded decks. Ferry timetables from Sape are old and unreliable.

For a couple, it comes down to time. Your Gandiva boarding time is fixed and confirmed in writing, and a crossing that depends on swell can arrive a day late. Weather between December and March is the worst case. If the adventure of getting there is part of the anniversary, take it as a separate trip, with days to spare, before you join us. If the date is fixed, fly: the Wings Air hop from Lombok is about an hour.

Gandiva sails from Labuan Bajo and returns there. We do not run a Lombok departure on this boat.

What this means for your dates

  • Arrive the day before boarding. This is the single change that protects the rest of the plan.
  • Land before late afternoon. Morning departures from Bali or Jakarta do this best.
  • Book flights after we confirm your boarding hour in writing, and send us the flight number so the harbour transfer fits it.
  • Ask for any surprise early. Decoration, cake, dinner and a photographer are quoted separately.
  • Read the Park fees page for the ticket rules. Visits are capped per day from 1 April 2026 and tickets must be reserved, so give us your dates and passport details early.

Send your dates by WhatsApp and the arrival day gets drafted with you, flight by flight, before any deposit moves.

FAQ

Is there a direct flight to Labuan Bajo from Europe or China?

No nonstop flight from Europe or China to Labuan Bajo was found when we checked on 3 November 2026. Travellers connect in Bali or Jakarta, and some use Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Schedules change, so check with the airline. Book a single through ticket if you can, and arrive the day before boarding so a delay does not cost you the trip.

How far is Komodo airport from the harbour?

Komodo airport is about 2 km from Labuan Bajo town and the harbour, roughly 10 minutes by car. Pick-up between airport or hotel and harbour is included in your Gandiva booking. Give us the flight number and we time it to match. The boarding hour itself is confirmed in writing at booking.

Can we arrive on the morning we board?

You can, but for an anniversary trip we'd advise against it. A delay, a cancelled flight or an airport closure can leave you at the wrong end of the island chain with a boat sailing without you. Landing the day before gives you a hotel night near the harbour, a calm dinner and a relaxed morning.

Are the decoration, cake and beach dinner included?

No. Decoration, a cake, a private beach dinner and a photographer are services on request, each with its own written quote and none free. Tell us the occasion when you book. Weather and the captain's plan decide where a dinner can be set up, and we say so up front rather than promise a location.
